From Publishers Weekly
Martin's (Silk and Steel) run-of-the-mill historical set in 1805 England and the Cape Verde Islands is strictly for readers who prefer their plot subordinate to steamy scenes. In lieu of creating a believable relationship between Randall Clayton, duke of Beldon, and Cait Harmon, an American, the author substitutes pages of hot, exceedingly repetitious sex scenes and a weak plot concerning an expedition to a deserted island to find the fabled necklace Antony gave Cleopatra. Needing to fund the expedition, Cait's father relies on a dubious baron/con artist whose previous business venture led to the death of Beldon's cousin. Is Cait's father part of the con? There's a lot of dangerous trekking through jungle to shake up the limping plot, but the padded writing is just a means to jungle seductions and dangers. How many times can the hero save the heroine from rock slides and wild animals? And can this relationship between two immature individuals, based on hot sex and inane secrets, be saved? (Oct.)

From Booklist
Notorious rake Randall Clayton, seventh Duke of Beldon, believes a fraud caused his young cousin to commit suicide after losing his family fortune. His search for the truth leads him to Caitlin Harmon, the daughter of an American archaeologist who is hot on the trail of a lost necklace of Cleopatra's and seemingly in cahoots with the man Rand thinks ruined his cousin. Cait, believing that she was responsible for her mother's death, has vowed never to marry so that she can take care of her father. Not wanting to miss out on experiencing passion, however, she enters into a clandestine affair with Rand, certain that she'll never see him again. But after leaving for a remote African island in quest of the necklace, she discovers that she's pregnant. Martin is adept at weaving sex scenes into the action as the lovers face tragedies that tear them apart until they finally realize that love has captured their hearts. Diana Tixier Herald

THIS IS AN OK BOOK
By A Customer
I generally like Martin's works, but this book was extremely flat. Like the previous readers, I also felt that the mistress Martin threw at the end was uncalled for and just ruined the book for me. The wife discovers her husband with the mistress as she searches for him. I want romance not infidelity. Take a pass on the book.

So incredibly bad
By Kristin
This was one of the worst books I have ever read. The heroine was TSTL times a million and the hero a selfish, manipulative pig. Why would I even care what happens to either of them? The hero goes on a full court press to debauch an innocent woman because HE wants her so badly. No thought given to the consequences for her of their affair. Then he humiliates her into a marriage she doesn't want because HE wants it. Again, no thought of her feelings on the matter. Then when she loses their baby he can't deal with HIS feelings. No thought of hers at all. Then to make HIMSELF feel better he decides to become the single man he was before he got married. He does not just spend one drunken night with his mistress, he buys her a new house and new clothes and escorts her all over town for a month giving no thought to the humiliation his wife would suffer because he only thinks of HIMSELF. Then when his wife busts him and quite rightly dumps his ass he doesn't think about the pain and humiliation he caused his grieving wife, he only thinks about how much pain her absence is causing HIM. How does he deal with his unhappiness? He gets drunk and abuses his staff because that is just how great of guy he is. Enter the bff to tell him to quit moping and do something besides abuse the maids. Eureka! Cait is MY wife and I want her back so I just need to go tell her that and make her come back to me because that would make ME feel better. It matters not that she may never want to lay eyes on the cheating SOB ever again, he wants her so he will make it so. The man is a disgusting, self centered jackass and I kept wanting a wild animal to eat him in the jungle. Even though she is TSTL I hope Rand dies young so she can meet a man who is worthy of her because the next road bump they hit he will be back in the arms of another woman. Men like that don't change. The whole book just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Not as good as some of her earlier books...
By A Customer
Randall Clayton, the Duke of Beldon falls for Cait Harmon. When she becomes pregnant he is forced to marry her. He can't admit how deeply he cares for her so when she loses their child he rekindles an old affair with his ex-mistress. He soon comes to his senses and realizes that he truly loves his "Caitie" but it is too late. She has discovered him with his mistress and leaves him. She joins her father in Africa where he is searching for a lost necklace. Rand quickly realizes just what his inability to admit his feelings has cost him and journey's to Africa to try and convince Cait to give him another chance. But he realizes that it's not as easy as that....love isn't the problem..trust is. Can he ever get Cait to trust him enough to restart their marriage? I have always loved Kat Martin's historical romances but her last two(including this one) have left a little to be desired. Although I like Rand and Cait and the story sucks you in, I had a problem with the infidelity storyline. I like a story that makes you feel good but the affair left me feeling disappointed. I also felt like Ms. Martin wrapped up the book to easy. I was left feeling as if things ended too quickly and easily. I am hoping her next book will be more like her older romances such as Gypsy Lord(great one!)
