Everything you know is wrong' - this was the message to the world that Paula Yates posted above her doorbell.
Once upon a time, a rock god met a brainy bombshell TV presenter who was married to a media 'saint'. When their lives collided, the events that unfolded were too bizarre even for fiction; the very public seduction and intense love affair, the fights, the drugs bust, heartbreaking custody battles, financial deals and the deaths of Paula and Michael were front-page news for months. But the vital facts of the web the lovers wove together were kept secret, and the reasons for their deaths were never clear, even to their family and friends.
Only one person was there to witness every aspect of the story - Gerry Agar. A former publicist and Paula's long-term friend, Gerry's life, both personal and professional, became inextricably tied to those of the star-crossed lovers, and to the one who would be left behind.
This is the stuff of modern legend; a red-blooded tragedy played out in the merciless glare of the media spotlight. Here are the facts, divulged in painful and deeply moving detail, and told with an intimacy that could only be disclosed by one caught in the centre of the storm. This is Gerry Agar's story of Paula, Michael & Bob.

I recommend this if you're a Hutchence fan
By Sweet Pandora
Unless you're a Michael Hutchence or Bob Geldof or in the miniscule minority, a Paula Yates fan, I don't think you'll enjoy this book. I liked it however, but didn't learn a whole lot that I didn't already know. Paula Yates first stalked the lead singer of the band, INXS, 10 years before she finally landed him as her boyfriend. Hutchence was caught up in a 5 year love relationship with the gorgeous model Helena Christenson. Once Hutchence was in his mid 30's, Paula's stalking paid off & they began a tumultuous affair that ended up bearing him his only child & ending an affair with a woman he'd been in love with, Christenson. Even the tabloids couldn't believe Hutchence would "dump" the beautiful sweet Danish model for the hoe Yates. Paula became pregnant before the year was out with his only child & completely unhinged his life. She brought so much anguish & trouble into a life that was not used to such turmoil. She changed his life for the worse & I think death was about the only way he could successfully get away from her. He took on all her problems & as a lifelong drama queen, there was always problems with Paula. She'd notify the press so they would be on hand to snap pics & lie to Michael that she didn't know how they were there. Yates divorced her long term hubby, Bob Geldof, whom she has three daughters by.
Hutchence grew extremely depressed with this new life & all the drama Yates had created for them with the press & her heated divorce from Geldof. He also was anxious about the upcoming 20 year reunion with his band. The final straw was when Geldof would not allow his divorced wife Yates to bring their 3 young daughters to Australia for Thanksgiving to visit Michael. Yates' daughters loved Michael as everyone that ever met him quickly did. Yates was one of the last people he spoke with & after drinking heavily & doing some recreational drugs all nite & also double doses of his anti-depressant drugs, Michael was messed up, depressed with what his life had become under Yate's influence & he hung himself with his belt in a hotel room in Sydney, Australia in November of 1997. There were a couple people that he had left messages for, crying & very depressed.
After his death, Yates fell to pieces & became hooked on heroin. Three short years later, she od'd in her bed with the couple's only child, Tiger Lily, who was four years old at the time. A friend of Yates came over when the little girl answered the phone & told the friend "that Mommy won't wake up." Geldof adopted the little girl & she was raised with her 3 other half sisters. Geldof loves her & has given Tiger a wonderful & loving home. Michael's sister & mother had wanted to raise Tiger, but the courts felt she should be raised with her sisters & award Geldof full custody. It was a tragic story & I feel strongly that if Hutchence had never gotten involved with someone as devious as Paula Yates was, his life would have been quite different & he would still be with us. His family blames her as well & everything I've ever read, which is plenty, points to that factor.
Hutchence also had a 2 year love relationship with Kylie Minongue, a famous pop singer in Australia before he left her & fell in love with Helena. Michael's story was heartfelt for me & was a suicide that should never have happened. He was surrounded by so many people that loved him so dearly & this shouldn't have been how it ended for this dynamite & striking man that had such presence. One of his best friends was the singer "Bono" from U2 & he wrote a song about how Michael got into a moment that he couldn't get out of. I'm always amazed at all the fans Hutchence has left & I'm blown away by so much of their music that I had never heard until I bought their music cd's & videos. The lyrics to many are so breathtakingly beautiful & show what a magnificent human being Michael Hutchence was. The little girl would be about 13 now & I hope she still looks like him - that would a gift in itself. R.I.P. dear Michael. You left us way too soon & we miss you!

"How Paula Yates killed Michael Hutchence and ruined Bob Geldof's life"
By J.P. Anderson
I've read the biography written by Micheal's mom and sister (which is PG13 and boring compared) and watched countless interviews with Paula and docos about Micheal's death and this book gives the clearest account of what really happened, behind closed doors.
No matter what you think of Gerry Agar and her motives she is the first person to put across what has to be the most real version of events, even if some of the recollected conversations were embellished for effect. It is a book after all!
She starts out on Paula's side - and they manipulate the media to hate Bob, then she and the nanny discover a cache of drugs in the house and decide they need to protect the children from these out of control drug addicts. And it's true, look how they both died, and Bob never stopped loving Paula all the way through her idiotic behaviour.
Every story you read in the media about Bob being a 'monster', about Michael's death being Auto Erotic Asphyxiation and anything else that made Paula look like an innocent victim - was orchestrated by her manipulating the British media, because Agar made all those calls to the media as a 'trusted friend'. She has the contact book to prove it. Michael was so off his face all the time he had no idea it was Paula tipping off the media about everything they were doing, she blamed Bob all the time and created this s*** storm of a life for both of those terrific men. Her lies eventually drove Michael in to a deep depression and a situation he couldn't get out of, so when he was off his face he hung himself. The coroner found no evidence of eroticism, Paula made all of that up to protect the fact she was the last person to speak to him, and she was always threatening to commit suicide if he didn't marry her. he was already in love with another woman and had told everyone he was going to leave Paula.
This book was fascinating but I really think a better title for it would have been:
"How Paula Yates killed Michael Hutchence and ruined Bob Geldof's life."

Everything I may know is wrong, but this is one juicy book!
By MortensOrchid
Marriages don't always work out. Sometimes two people get together when they are younger and think that they are going to be together forever, and then they change and things around them change and they realize that they are not meant to be together after all. When it happens in the tabloid media, things are made all the worse for both parties. When it came to Bob, Michael and Paula, things couldn't get any worse for all parties involved. Who's to blame here? We can point a lot of fingers.
Paula's longtime friend, Gerry Agar, penned this book to defend her friend Paula. She points out that even when she and Bob were still married and long before Michael came into the picture that Paula and Bob were not happy. Paula was supporting him and the family as a television host and personality while Bob, despite his own Live Aid fame, was floundering in his music career. They lead separate lives and time schedules. Agar also points out that Bob was one of the rudest and most aloof people that she ever encountered, who was not friendly with her or any others around while Paula was a ball of bubbles and cheerfulness. Before Michael came into the picture, Paula had long admired him (saying that they had a framed photograph of him with Christmas lights surrounding it in the midst of their Christmas decor spread at home). And then, Michael came into the picture.
What I was not so shocked to read was that Paula pursued Michael, showing up at his hotels and jetting off to see him wherever he was. Michael was a home wrecker, but she was not so innocent either. She pursued Bob during his heyday in the Boomtown Rats, following him so closely his bandmates dubbed her "the limpet". Once a fan, always a fan. Having been a longtime fan myself, it's hard to separate yourself from the image verses the real person. Sometimes you find out the hard way that the man you thought was the ultimate is really not as great as he seemed to be to you on stage. What was so disturbing to me was to see how Paula changed to be the woman that Michael must have wanted. She went from clean living to using drugs just as Michael did, got breast implants, and turned into a drama queen. And one day, Michael killed himself. She refused to believe that he would commit suicide, how could he be unhappy after the birth of their daughter? Who knows? Michael was using, he was out of his mind, and he was, for whatever reason, unhappy. And Paula couldn't live without him, and three years later she would die as well.
The person I admire the most is Bob in this circus. Despite all the public fights and humiliations, he survived it. He is a good father, as he was clearly the most responsible party in this, and continues to be a good father to his three daughters. And what a stand up guy, to take in the child of his ex wife and her lover, Tiger Lilly, and raise her as his own. She's not his biological child but he loves her as if she were. I hope Tiger and Bob's other daughters, Fifi, Peaches and Pixie, do not go down the same path that Paula did, as all eyes are on them now to see what they will or won't do. Only time will tell - although Peaches seems to be the wildest one of the bunch these days.
