Darksoul, by Eveline Hunt

Seventeen-year-old Hazel Lisle has a problem. Or two. Or three.

Problem number one: Asher Evans, her best friend and long-time crush. A lover of piercings with tan skin and a posh British accent, he’s spunky, fun, dirty-mouthed...and clearly more than what he seems.

Then there is Hunter Slade. Cold. Infuriating. Unreadable. He knows just how to work her last nerve. But under his calm, impassive mask, he’s hiding a terrible secret of his own.

Hunter and Ash are the least of Hazel’s worries. Someone is out to kill her, and she has no idea why. Monsters seem to come from left and right. Invisible wings follow her everywhere she goes. There’s a voice, soft and strangely familiar, inside her head. After a series of scary encounters, Hazel doesn't know who or what to believe. Only one thing is for sure: She will not go down without a fight.

**Due to strong language and crude sexual themes, this book is only recommended for readers ages 16 and up.**

Good Book--Weighed, Measured, Left Wanting More and More
By J.O.
As my tagline says, it's a good book. Skip to the last line of my review if you want the short, short version, because I'm about to enter a little bit of a rant that may be a bit tangential at times.

If you like: bad-boys, fiery heroines, angst, refreshing twists on a popular supernatural tropes, love triangles, people with wings and powers.
It reminds me of one of my favorite series, "Fallen Angels" (Books: "After Eden" and "Beloved Purgatory" by Katherine Pine). If you need a more mainstream reference compare it to something like "Hush, Hush" by Becca Fitzpatrick, or the early "House of Night" books by PC and Kristin Cast.

I will begin my review of Darksoul by emphasizing this: I like the book. I read the book in less than 24 hours. I started reading it one night, made poor life choices and stayed up way to late reading it, woke up the next morning and skipped work from sleep deprivation and finished the book before noon.

You can cut the sexual tension with an knife (definitely 16 and up; blame Asher and his sinfully teasing mouth). There is a brilliant love triangle between Hazel and her romantic choices. Asher is the mouthy, flirty bad-boy who every girl wants, but he has secrets, dangerous and dark ones, and namely ones that revolve around Hazel, a messy past, and what fate may hold for them. Hunter is the strong and silent type with a secret soft side and he's a little bit broken and a definite tortured soul that make you just want him to get Hazel so something good happens in his life. These are two guys who are very different, yet at the same time very similar. On occasion, these guys dance that fine line between infuriating and heartthrobs. I'm usually one to "pick a team" in these situations, but in this case I just can't decide.

There's a moment when suddenly you're whole view on the book changes and you'll want to go back and reread the book until that point (I basically did that). It's not something I saw coming, until I looked back at all the hints and clues.

It reminds me so much of my high school days, in a way. The friends are silly and sarcastic. There's a good coating of angst, but nothing to drown in. The dialogue is witty and a little two perfect to be real (but it makes for an interesting read).

It's pretty typical for a good Late YA/New Adult Paranormal Romance. It's a little tropey (not atypical for most books in this genre). I would have liked to have a fuller view of the world, but it is the first book, and you're discovering the world much the same way Hazel is.

I am dying to read the rest of the series and you will be too because of all of the questions that will be answered in the next book. BUT WAIT! You can't. Ever.

My biggest complaint is all of the questions that will go unanswered. The author has said that she is not continuing the series: "I have no plans to write and publish a sequel to Darksoul." (Her blog.) She says: "If you’re wondering why that is, the answer is simple: I’ve outgrown the book. The way I wrote then is not the way I write now. Lots of things have happened since I published Darksoul, and I feel that going back and continuing Hazel’s story would be moving backward when I’ve finally started moving forward." She said that the likelihood of finishing the sequel that she started writing is very, very low, but she might post parts of what she's written on her blog.

Her blog: http://eviewritesbooks.blogspot.com/2015/04/announcement-theres-no-sequel-in-works.html

My problem is that this book just is not stand alone material. I can casually read a 300 page book in a day, totally immersed in the fictional universe. When I finished with this book, I wanted a sequel. I wanted a whole series. Even just a pre-order or release date for when I could get my fix. This time, it's not happening. This series will forever be unfinished; this is my #1 pet peeve with any fictional work, be it movies, TV shows, books, anime, manga, comics, etc.

As a reader, I'm left dazed and trying to get my barrings from that that massive question inducing bomb that exploded in this book. As a writer, I get it. You grow, you change, you're a different person now than when you wrote it.

RANT OVER! I know this isn't the most concise review, but let my long winded excitement and agony over this book be an indicator of my feeling.

OVERALL: *4.5 of 5* Read this book, but only if you're okay with reading the first book in what was sure to be a good series that in all likelihood will NEVER be continued. I will definitely be rereading this book, yearning for more material, all the while affectionately cursing Eveline Hunt for dangling a good story in front of me and not finishing it. I will definitely read anything published or posted in the future.

Read it!

So, yes, this could be a little long winded at times, and yes, it could also be the ultimate love triangle mind f**k, but seriously it's a definite good read. I honestly gave it five stars just to encourage other people to give it a try. I am so glad the author decided to go a different way than most of these novels. The center female character acts like I suppose a normal person would in this situation (minus the ultimate witty banter from the characters that I am sure only the author could talk in). Instead of the same old same old demon-hunter/regular-person-by-day plot that is so over done I refuse to read any more series like that. This author stays fresh and true to the characters and story line. Read it!

An awesome must read! My new favorite book!
By Julie Wiseman
I could not put this book down! It is a uniquely written, captivating story with characters that truly pull at your emotions. I read this in one sitting and then immediately went back and read it a second time. The story grows and grows and becomes more addicting the more you read it. Ash and Hunter are complex, confusing, dark but lovable, and they are constantly confusing the heck out of Hazel but she deeply cares for them both as much as they care for her. The chemistry between Hazel and both boys is so hot it's hard to decide who should be with who. The storyline itself is unbelievably different than any I have read and it was refreshing to read something both so good and unique. This new author is on her way to becoming very well known! I literally can not wait for the second book to come out. This story has a long way to go and I'll be there every step of the way.
