Very Disappointing

I was so disappointed by this book. Barna spends lots of time pointing out errors in modern Christianity, but very little on what to do about it. I didn't find anything in the book that would help me "think like Jesus" more or make "the right decision everytime." The book seems to be geared more for new Christians rather than those of us who've been believers for awhile. And newer Christians wouldn't get any closer to thinking like Jesus by reading this book, though they might gain some useful knowledge.

I wish I had read some of the reviews before buying it. I'm glad I bought it used.

Barna does a great job with surveying and analyzing what is going on with modern Christianity. I think he should stick to what he knows best.

The crisis of the Christian mind

Here Barna makes the case that Christians, particularly evangelicals, do not live like we should because we do not THINK like we should -- i.e., like Christ. He says that we spend an hour a week in church learning a few verses and then spend the rest of the week letting the world tell us what and how to think.

I believe he is pretty much spot on. Why, then, only three stars? Barna makes a great case for having a Christian worldview, and his concluding material on what it looks like to have one and how to build one in a congregation is great, but the major part of the book is his analysis of the seven great worldview questions, and his treatment of them was not that good. Not bad, but not that good.

The first three and last three chapters are worth the purchase price of the book, but for a better look at worldviews and the Christian worldview, I recommend (as does the author) the work of James Sire and Harry Blamires.

Great Tool for the Christian Walk

George Barna has put together a book that will get every believer thinking, if they would take the time to read it. Of course, when you read it, you should have your Bible right there beside you.

I had never before thought in terms of a world view and a biblical world view. Makes perfect sense to me! Developing a perspective on what I see and hear while living in the world makes more sense to me when viewed through the lens of the Bible. I do not see at all, as has been suggested, that Mr. Barna is telling readers how to think. He is suggesting tools we can use in our daily walk as we make decisions on every level. The tools he suggests are supported in the Bible, but again, they are only tools and we choose when and how to use them. It takes practice and perseverance.

Christians were originally known as "Followers of the Way." We cannot follow if we cannot see the road signs and these tools provide the sight needed. Again, this is a good read but needs to be read and understood in relationship to the Bible.

Very detailed book beautiful illustrations. Everything is clear except facial fat tissues. I mean they are kind of clear to some extent. Price feels little bit too high, because it is just literally face covered, not cranial part .

Terrific novel...

Captain Maneka Trevor, of the Dinochrome Brigade, is one of the few to have survived the horrible battle on the planet Chartres. Though still active military, she carries guilt of surviving when her Bolo "Benjy" and the others in her brigade did not. Maneka is surprised to find herself before Rear Admiral Sedgewood until she learns why she was summoned. Maneka has been chosen to be part of a special mission called "Operation Seed Corn". The Melconian Empire is winning the war. The Humans are losing. Those chosen for this special mission are to travel far away, find a new habitual planet, and begin a new human colony.
Commodore Lakshmaniah was to be in charge. However, when the Puppies arrive she and her people go out to meet them head on, in hopes of keeping them away from the transports and industrial ships. They mostly succeed. Both teams seem to wipe each other out. Yet some of the "Seed Corn" convoy is also destroyed. Maneka and Lazarus, the Bolo who is assigned to her and was also at Chartres, are now in charge. Commodore Lakshmaniah, before her death, had believed there was at least one Puppy ship under stealth somewhere. Though Maneka prays the info is incorrect, she takes all precautions. (The reader knows from the beginning that Lakshmaniah's info IS correct. The stealth ship shadows the convoy until, over a year later, a new planet is found by the Humans.)
The new planet is named "Indrani". As the humans settle in, the Melconians prepare to attack. They intend to wipe out the human race and take the human's higher tech equipment as their own. Only two Bolos stand in the way of the overwhelming number of Melconian troops.
**** This is David Weber's second Bolo novel. The first is compiled out of several stories, like an anthology where the stories all link together eventually. This novel, however, is one long story. The author, David Weber, is famous for having complex tactical strategies in his works. This book is no different. The readers get to see the tactical equations taken by the Humans AND the Puppies. Many of these are utterly brilliant! All-in-all, another winner for Weber. I look forward to his next release, which is to be another "Honor Harrington" novel (due out in October 2005.) Stellar reading here! ****

Better, Much better on the whole.

The books is a take off of one of the stories from David Weber's Colletion of Bolo stories entitled "BOLO!" and I found it a decent read.

Captain M is a wounded Bolo commander and would like nothing better than to have died with her Bolo... But soldiers sometimes aren't given a choice and she is sent off to defend a secret mission to establish a colony where hopefully the Dog Boys won't find it.

But unfortunately things don't go according to plan and the enemy does find them. To make a long story short, victory while costly doesn't destroy the colony... But it does give Captain M a much longer lease on life as a Bolo commander...

I found this book to a good deal better than the previous effort by Weber's Bolo! Definately a good read if you like David Weber and Bolo's!

a Bolo as the antithesis of a Beserker

For years Keith Laumer wrote Bolo stories, and now, after his death, David Weber skilfully continues the storyline. There are certainly places in this text where you can see Weber's style of writing from his Honor Harrington series.

This book could have been improved with a map of the land conflict between the humans and the Dog Boys. Think back to such classic military SF as Pournelle's Janissary series, or Stirling's General books. Both series came with simple maps that greatly helped the narrative.

You may already be aware of another long running series - about Beserkers, by Fred Saberhagen. Weber's book, and the earlier Bolo stories, are a nice antithesis to the bleak universe containing Beserkers. Or to the entire idea that dates back to Frankenstein, of a machine turning against its creator. The Bolo in this book is crucial in preventing a group of humans from being wiped out. Indeed, the backdrop of the book is a larger genocidal conflict between humans and the Dog Boys, where the humans are outnumbered and losing.

While there are some logical discontinuities between this story and earlier Bolo tales, some readers will surely wish that Weber writes more in this setting.

Best Book Written During The Last 50 Years

This book is usually priced around $50. (a mere one cent move in grain futures) Yet the same cost provides us with a wealth of knowledge far beyond a lot of the modern books written on commodity trading!

Whilst certain things like placing a 2-3 cents stop will have gotten outdated, many of the ideas such as to divide your trading capital into 10 equal parts and risk only one tenth at a time are useful for the present time and also for the future!

The section that is most appealing is the area that deals with the TIME periods. As Gann said: "Time is the most important factor." I am in complete agreement with him.

Another thing that I will like to add is that there are a lot of things that need to be understood as the reader may not grasp these on a first quick reading.

I will definitely suggest that ALL teaders of all types of futures should get a copy of it and read it more than a few times. Use it as a source of knowledge and as a reference guide as well.

From the use of this book, you will be inspired to carry out your own experiments and get some interesting results.

WD Gann Adds Volumes to the Commodity Trading World

WD Gann wrote this updated version of the book in 1951. Yes, 1951. His methodologies and style, as well as his world view, are so....well 1950's. However, what he provides to those of us who want to be successful in trading commodites is a broad set of 'do's and dont's' that you can find in nearly every trading book written today. You know, "stop loss orders", "dont over trade", "never risk more than X%" of your capital on a given trade, "let your winning trade's ride", "get out of a bad trade immediately", "when in doubt, there is no doubt".... We have read them all before. NONE of this is of any real value to the modern trader. However, what is of value, is getting a recognition of the painstaking historical analysis that WD Gann went through BEFORE he traded any commodities. This book includes several 100 year analyses of all the traded commodities of his time. The analyses include what happened in the "month of September in 1897" in cotton. And then that is followed by the next relevant technical occurance, which happened in October of 1897. He does this for many of the commodites of the time from 1841 to 1941. What the reader comes away with in my opinion, is that commodities are cyclical in nature. And that if you can holistically 'feel' the history and the motion of the cycles that exist in each commodity, you can trade more effectively. This includes understanding the 'how we got here' and the relevant bigger picture points that one can glean from looking at the historical data on a specific commodity. For example, that in the last 100 years (1841-1941), (I am making this up) Corn has reached a new yearly high in the month of June 22 times, and a new low in August 36 times. Whereas, new highs were reached in February only 2 times, and new lows reached in December 2 times. This information is valuable to a trader who knows what to do with this type of information. In my view, dont look to this book for more information on "how to trade" as much as you should look at 'what to do' to improve your chances of success. One last note, if you are looking to get some background or academic knowledge on how GANN lines are used, or GANN Boxes or any of the other GANN ascribed technical tools used or invented by GANN, this book DOES NOT show, teach or discuss any of them.

W.D. Gann is considered to be the greatest trader of all time. This book shows how to make profits on the commodities exchanges. It is combines theory and practice. It is very logical and he presents an excellent case for making money in commodities. Many trading books are expensive and not worth the price you pay for them. Ganns books and courses are an exception. They are worth every penny. What impressed me most about the book, is that Gann is honest. He doesn't try to con his readers.

About the Author
Major General Ian Cardozo was born in Bombay and educated at St. Xavier's School and College. In July 1954, he joined the joint Services Wing, which later became the National Defence Academy. Here, he was the first cadet to win the gold medal for being the best all-round cadet, and the silver medal for being the first in order of merit. He was commissioned to the first battalion of the Fifth Gorkha Rifles (FF) in 1958 and was one of the first officers to be awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry on a patrol in NEFA in 1960. Wounded in the battle at Sylhet in Bangladesh in 1971, he overcame the handicap of losing a leg and became the first officer to be approved for command of an infantry battalion. He retired in 1993 from his appointment as chief of staff of a corps in the East. He has worked with the Spastic Society of Northern India. At present he is working for persons with disability as Chairman of the Rehability Council of India and as the Vice President of the War Wounded Foundation.

Average writing...Poorly written account....

The subject matter is of vast importance to all Indians. INS KHUKRI is the first ship after India's Independence to go down with her Captain. But it is not a particularly well-written book. The author has not been able to recreate India of early 70s, giving so few cultural reference points that it sounds hollow and overtly technical like a training manual. I think it has been written dispassionately but nevertheless it is still a must read. After giving background of the reasons of the war, timetable of the attacks, some technical mambo-jumbo about sonar technology, it moves on to Survivors' account, which is a vast improvement from the initial chapters.

Surprised to find Indonesia so anxious to help Pakistan by planning to engage Indian navy in the Andaman sea. Idiots, I must say, both Pakistan and Indonesia!!!
