Vibrant, passionate, and real.

It's pretty rare for me to take the time to write a review online, but I'm making an exception.

This book is beautiful.

The author manages to take a familiar trope, that of old friends gathering together to celebrate a life event, and imbues it with new life and meaning. Themes are reminiscent, but in no way derivative of, The Big Chill. The novel has a solid and tactile sense of place -- the coastal Texas setting is so real, you can smell the salt air.

The real star of The Luckiest, however, is the characters. Aaron and Nik's romance is brimming with the kind of passion that can only be brought about by a long, unwilling separation. Nik's determination to win Aaron over again, despite a singularly heartbreaking breakup, brings to mind Jane Austen's Persuasion. The extended cast of vibrant characters are rich with detail, and rarely if ever fade into the background -- their stories feel as real and as present as Aaron and Nik's main-plot romance, and their relationships with each other feel authentic.

The Luckiest is that rare romance novel that sticks with you long after you've set it down. I found myself reading slower and slower, just to prolong the pleasure of reading; after I finished, I wandered around the house smiling at nothing -- and everything.

I have been eagerly anticipating this book since it was announced, and it was definitely worth the wait!

The Luckiest follows Aaron, a Texan who is currently making it in New York City as he travels back home for a whirlwind weekend helping throw a wedding for his best friend. The fact that his best friend is marrying the best friend of his former love complicates things a tad, but the story sparkles with their careful (and maybe not so careful) return to each other's orbit, all set to the backdrop of a beautiful Texas week.

The Luckiest brought back sharp memories for me of that on the cusp era of just post-college when everything and nothing seemed possible all at once. The people involved in your life at that time are so important to your formation of self, and reading as Nik and Aaron rediscovered each other all while in the presence of the friends and family that shaped their original bond was what made this book work so well for me. I will say that while there are other character to root for, I was so focused on Nik and Aaron that I did let the auxiliary friends fade into the background a bit. It was no loss to me, though!

Also, McWarren's ability to describe not only amazing sexual connections, but the emotional side of those connections, is superb. It doesn't feel like a gay romance novel in any way, but a novel about the enduring connection between two humans. It helps as well that this book has a great level of diversity, in a way that feels authentic and not overdone, and completely true to its Texas setting. I'm so thrilled to have this on my digital shelf to turn to time and time again, and to lend to all my friends.

2.5 Stars, I Had to Force Myself to Finish

I had 2 big problems with this story. First, there were too many characters. It became confusing to keep track of everyone, where everyone fit together, who was sleeping with who, who used to be sleeping with who, and consequently you never really got a good idea of who these people really were. There were just too many of them.
My second big problem was that there was no conflict. Nothing happens. Nada. ***Spoilers*** there is tension between Nik and Aaron for about 30 pages and then...they're together...and nothing else happens. Well aside from the incredibly boring description of all the wedding preparations, which I'm sure is exciting if you're there in person, but isn't so fun to read.
I don't think I'll look for anything by this author again. This wasn't really to my taste, and although I don't usually comment on price, $8 was a very steep price for this one.

Graduate level poker

When I saw the title of the book, I understood immediately the reason behind it. I noticed that some others on the forums were confused by it or thought it didn’t make much sense. But if you’ve read Mathematics of Poker or similar analyses, you have to have some idea of what position you will end up in when you make earlier decisions. If you don’t, you could end up playing your hand face-up on the River. And since the pot is the largest on the River, you are giving away a huge amount of equity if your opponent knows this. Getting this street right will make it easier for you to plan your hand from the Flop on.

I have played limit hold’em far more than no-limit, so I’m looking for ways to understand the transition, what to think about, what things to think about differently, and so on. This book is a great way for me to put those pieces together and be able to apply those principles on real hands.

One of those important differences is that it’s not just understanding your opponent’s range but how your bet sizing will affect the way your opponent splits his range into fold, call, and raise. In limit, you have one bet size to choose from, and you have far less reason to bet-fold. But here, you have to figure out where you’re getting optimal value by adjusting from min-bet to all-in.

The author points out early on that because there are so many small variables that go into a situation, you can play around with those variables to produce 20 variations on any particular hand example. So, let’s say you have the same betting sequence and board cards, but instead of assuming the opponent is loose-passive, we assume weak-tight. How does that change what range they show up with? How does that change our optimal play? It can be wildly different, from betting large to just checking it down because we have no value bet any longer. Or just change the River card to any of the other 45 possibilities. Or assume the Turn was a bet-call instead of checked through.

As someone who has read a lot of poker books, there’s always a bit of drudgery in the beginning of each one where the author feels obliged to go over the fundamentals again: what is EV, how do you calculate pot odds, what is a semi-bluff, etc. There’s none of that here, and it’s really refreshing. Even some of the more advanced stuff like different range shapes is covered in previous books, and you don’t get wasted pages going over those terms again. If you don’t know those concepts yet, you shouldn’t be starting this book anyway. And I’m glad the author stuck to that position.

The book is organized very logically. The first section is Bet or Check, from both in position and out of position, and the second section is Fold, Call, or Raise, again from both IP and OoP. There are lots of hand examples, quizzes, and so on. The text layout is very easy to read as different sections are highlighted, certain important nuggets are set off in bold, and it is overall visually engaging. I can understand why the large hardcover size was chosen, and it would be a very different reading experience to try to condense it into a paperback format. I usually prefer everything on pdf, but it's like having a poker textbook to study out of, and that makes for a very different reading experience, too. If they taught poker at a graduate level, this is what the textbooks would look like.

There is no index or glossary, but it has a compilation of the various Nuggets throughout the text in the very back, along with page references if you want to go back and re-read that section again. Given the logic of the layout, it shouldn’t be hard to find any particular topic anyway.

QTip's master work

You will learn not only "what" to do but more importantly "why" so you can assess your own play. Unlike other poker authors who only back up their statements with their "experience", QTip explains everything with simple, solid math. There are a LOT of calculations and charts in this book, and they lay out information in some ways that are eye-opening to say the least.

The book focuses only on the river, with two huge benefits. Mainly, it makes analysis a lot simpler for teaching purposes; also, since pots and bets are biggest on the river, improving play on this street will directly improve your winrate a fair bit.

Just a warning, this is not a book for people who want quick answers, a system, or secret moves; it's here for those willing to put in work to learn accurate EV-based poker thinking. It's like a college textbook: very densely packed with information, and filled with examples and exercises.

One of the best technically sound authors in the game. This book reads like a college math book that gives you lots of homework to practice on.

Check out his math books if you are a beginner first though.

Appalling number of errors here . . .

Looking forward to improving my skills in the Croatian language, I was appalled by the large number of glaring errors contained in this guide. There are dozens of mistakes, some truly unbelievable. For instance, the author doesn't seem to know how to conjugate the future tense. You may say "Ja cu citati" or you may say "Ja budem citala" but you certainly would never ever say "Ja budem citati", as he teaches! There are several glaring errors of this nature, and very, very many others not quite so serious, such as inaccurate translations i.e. questions translated as statements; word for word translations from idiomatic English, (making the phrase meaningless in Croatian); outdated vocabulary; and lots of typos. I am sure Mr. Susnjar knows better, perhaps his editing and proofing staff let him down. The organization of the book was good, as is the great number of phrases, if only one could be sure they were actually correct. Learning from this book does increase one's knowledge of the language, but who needs help learning to speak in a kinda-sorta mixed up Croatian. (Too many of us are already really good at that!) Hopefully a corrected edition will soon be forthcoming. Mr. Susnjar, fix up this book, and I will purchase it again - just teach us correctly next time.

Partially Useful

I bought this as my first dictionary as I was learning the language. When I actually got to Croatia, I showed it to the native speakers (college students), and they pointed out more than 20 mistakes in as many pages.
Other than that, I did find that the grammer portion (in the front) was helpful, and I do still refer to that quite often.
Use this book as a rudimentary reference. For a more comprehensive dictionary to English, I suggest Langenschiedt's.
