Such are the beginnings of this wickedly sexy story.

With a bit of magick from Izzy's godmother Celeste, Izzy and Ian are given a second chance at happiness in a different time and place. 1768 Caribbean. Will Izzy fight for what she wants? Will she fight for the happiness she can have with Ian or will she take the easy way out.

I highly recommend this fun high seas romp. Jennifer Jakes has a definite winner.

This is a great little novelette about a woman who is injured in a stunt on a movie scene. Upon her rescue, she finds herself aboard a vintage ship where her husband is captain. He does not recognize her and she soon realizes she has been transported back in time.
I love the premise of this book, a woman going back in time and finding all the characters of her regular life residing in the past. Steamy love scenes between the protagonist and her spouse are full, sultry, and engaging. Very well written. For light erotica and historical romance, this story is a winner!

Disappointing. "The Ultimate Trail Running Guide for Beginners" only took me 10 minutes to read. There is hardly enough here to make a magazine article. No diagrams, pictures, or lists. If you have a free option then go for it. I feel cheated that I paid three bucks for it. Caveat emptor.

This is an excellent book, it gives a comprehensive report of what you need to do to engage your self with trail running. A lot of the tips that is mentioned in this book I already new since I have being trail running for the last 5 years now and my experience is depicted in my first book Thirsty For Health.
They were a lot though that I learned from this book and it’s always a good idea to refresh knowledge that you already know. Repetition is the mother of learning.
Very useful book for people that are newbie’s to trail running and the language is plain and simple to follow.

Constructively Provocative

Paul Jones, organist and Music Director at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia is, by all accounts, a very talented individual. He was privileged to serve alongside James Boice (who once said "Paul is everything I ever prayed for in a music director") and now works closely with Philip Ryken in serving one of America's foremost Presbyterian churches. Singing and Making Music, subtitled "Issues in Church Music Today" is Jones' attempt to distill and share some of his years of accumulated wisdom and knowledge.

Singing and Making Music is not a traditional book, emphasizing an argument that moves logically from introduction to conclusion, but is a collection of essays dealing with the common theme of worshipping God through music. To some extent this leaves the book feeling a little bit disjointed and without a consistent flow. At the same time, this format allows the author to cover a wide range of topics without having to bridge one to another. I feel that this is a suitable format for such a book book. Jones covers a great deal of ground through the book's thirty-three chapters which are grouped under four headings: Corporate Worship, Hymnody and Psalmody, Issues and Composers and Composition. Here is a selection of chapter titles:

While any Christian could benefit from reading this book, the target audience is clearly intended to be other music directors or worship leaders. With my limited knowledge of musical theory, I was occasionally unable to follow or understand the author's arguments. This was particularly true of the chapters which discussed topics which are far more theoretical than practical to me, such as "The Anatomy of a Hymn Tune," a chapter in which we read the following: "Such intervallic relationships between voices other than the melodic one (i.e., the altor, tenor, and bass) have to do with harmonic choices. The harmony throughout the hymn tune is functional, yet colorful, with numerous intentional dissonances." For all I know, he may have just insulted my country or provided a recipe for chocolate brownies (though I suspect not).

Thankfully, the majority of the book is perfectly accessible to a person like myself who loves music, but knows very little about it. Jones is always gracious but always biblical when dealing with some of the more contentious issues facing churches struggling with the subjects of worship and music. He argues that Christians ought to avoid the world's musical trends and to develop music that is distinct. The book's main points can be summarized under the three following headings. First, worship practices must be measured by the Word of God. "Scriptural principles should inform all our thinking, traditions, and practices in worship." Second, we need to comprehend the pastoral nature of music ministry. "Music is not in competition with pastoral work. It is pastoral work in the sense that it can provide many of the same kinds of spiritual care and leadership that pastoral ministry provides." Third, we should ensure that budgets and practices are informed by these truths. "Music in worship cannot be truly conformed to biblical standards and examples of excellence unless it is actively supported by the church leadership in word and deed and is adequately funded." You can see a logical progression from theory to practice. A church should move from asking "Why do we do what we do in the way that we do it? How should we be doing it according to Scripture? What will it take to make it so?"

While Jones serves in a large church and surely enjoys a large budget, he is sensitive to those who serve in smaller churches and may have only a limited number of resources, both financial and human, to dedicate to music. He provides suggestions on the first instruments a church should purchase and the type of music director a church should eventually seek. He suggests when a church should seek to hire a music director and what type of responsibilities he should enjoy. There is even a chapter providing instruction on purchasing an organ.

Always practical and biblical, Singing and Making Music was an enjoyable read and one that is suitable for both the laity and those in leadership. Ligon Duncan, in his endorsement for this book, described it with the phrase "constructively provocative." I believe that is an apt description. This book is deeply biblical, uplifting and constructively provocative. It is well worth reading.

A book that made me shout "Amen!"

As an organist who grew up musically on the street corner with no formal training, I found myself shouting "Amen!" at various points throughout the book. It also caused me to seriously reconsider whether my motives for playing organ are in line with scripture, or to get the people in the congregation to shout "Amen!" when I am done.

A definitive line is drawn in Mr. Jones' book between trained musicians (whom I think the author meant trained with a lot of study and degrees, but hopefully includes "naturals" like me with no initials after his name) versus the engineer who claims he isn't all that musical but loves strumming guitar chords along with his five buddies who also love strumming guitar and together form the basis for a lot of the worship bands in churches today. The author, I believe, would rather we see the musical half of the worship service handled by people trained or at least very deep and wide as musicians, not by someone who has to force a strumming beat under every song and pitch it in E because he only knows those chord changes. The author cites how in King David's time, thousands of capable musicians were hired to do worship in the temple. And note the term hired, which caused me also to say "Amen!"

The author does not simply say that guitars and drums don't belong in worship, but he does make the point about having the right instrument(s) for the job. Moving the campfire-perfect guitars into a huge church sanctuary where you have to amplified them makes about as much sense as dragging the pipe organ into pastor's living room for some singing during a small group study (don't worry, we'll stuff some rags in the pipes to make it softer).

Upon closing the book, which I read in only two sittings, I took away a strong commitment to play more earnestly and choose better music for Sundays. I also pledged to not just whip off a hymn improvisation because I can, but take care in choosing how to play something and, yes, practicing. I think I heard God say, "Amen!" to that.

This book caused me to be more assured in some of my own thoughts about traditional/contemporary music issues, but also to embark on ways to make my traditional musical offering more worthy of the Master. If changing minds and hearts was the objective of the author, he was successful. To understand why, well, read the book.

Very fair and insightful.

I can't say enough about this book, so I will sum it up as best as I can.

I am a 24-year old worship leader from Florida. I have recently been challenged to think of the words that I sing, and really pray over them. I stumbled upon this book upon Amazon's recommendation, and I've been blessed ever since I opened the front cover. Growing up in the contemporary Christian movement (CCM), I feel like I've missed a lot of history and deep, rich theology. Reading this book (I'm only halfway through) has given me such a meaningful appreciation for the art of what I do every week. So without getting into any details, for the amateur worship leaders, like myself, PLEASE pick up this book and study it. Highlight, underline, circle, and memorize as much as you possibly can. Paul Jones has done an incredible job at explaining such deep history, and making it understandable for an ignorant kid like myself.

Witty and brilliant.

If you are expecting the usual L.M. Montgomery story with feisty young girls having adventures and meeting boys etc, you will be disappointed in this book. If you, on the other hand, can free youself from this expectation, you are in for a treat. The story is about a coveted heirloom, the Dark jug. The head of the Dark and Penhallow clans, Aunt Becky, dies, and leaves everyone wondering who will inherit the Dark jug. However, her will stipulates that no one will know until a year after her death. This year brings about many changes in the clan, and the story follows several clan members, irrespective of wether they want the jug or not. At times it is touching, at times it is wickedly funny.

My only caveat is that if you have problems with pet cats being killed, you might struggle a bit with one of the last chapters.

Not bad

This text is relatively good book on database systems. In my opinion, it should not be the first book you read on the topic. Also, chapter organization could/should be done other way.
Whatever the case, this text revolves around use of UML in database modeling, which is not my favorite tool for this time. I like ERDs and what's more foot-crow ERDs. So, I couldn't find any in this text. But, since authors say that UML is pretty much becoming a standard and many people would agree with them, I will keep my preference for crows-foot ERD to myslef.
This text covers topics like: distributed systems, transaction management, and web technologies. These are not the easiest topics and reader should have some previous knowledge of databases before getting to this book.

Got this for my girlfriend for her DB classes, this book really made the concepts really easy to understand and made databases simple especially for someone who is new to the subject. It is also a good book to read for those who need to get back in touch with they database theory.

113 PAGES! "...but for my part, if a book is well written, I always find it too short."

"...but for my part, if a book is well written, I always find it too short." (The Juvenilia of Jane Austen) But in this case, a mere 113 pages at $12.50 is simply TOO SHORT.

I have been looking forward to reading this since it was first teased on author Pamela Aidan's website over a year ago. As expected,and like her previous "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" series, "Young Master Darcy: A Lesson in Honor" is very Austen-like, exceptionally well written in adhering to the mores of the times, the dialogue is believable, and the story is unique. However, I must complain that it is ENTIRELY too short. It reads very much like the beginning of something bigger. Yes, I realize one might argue that it is the beginning of something bigger, "Pride & Prejudice." Yes, yes. I completely understand that concept. But I thought it would encompass more than a two week span when Darcy is but 13 years old.

I feel a little better having just learned that on the author's website it is advertised as "Volume 1," alluding that we might expect a Vol. 2 or even 3. Which then brings me to grumble about the price... $12.50 for a meager 113 pages is pretty pricey... especially knowing I will most likely buy the rest of the supposed series. And hope there is a bit more bulk to the rest.

Writing style and short story, 4 stars.
Price point and not advertising as a Novella, 2 stars.

Despite all this, Pamela Aidan is still one of my favorite Jane Austen-esque authors.

Great book - Abysmal Editing

I liked this book a lot, although like others, I was disappointed by its brevity. Pamela Aiden is my favorite Austenesque author; her stories are both creative and consistent with Austen's tone.

But this time, I found myself distracted by the complete absence of copyediting - I kept looking for the next gaffe. My favorite: page 41, "bowel of marmalade". This isn't a sequel - it's sequelae.

What, precisely costs $12.50 for just over one hundred pages, since the publisher clearly does not employ literate staff to produce the book? Shame on you, Wytherngate Press. Four stars for the author, one star for the publisher, five stars for the clever designer who came up with the perfect painting for the cover.

A Prequel Novella to Pride and Prejudice

After surviving his first term at Eton, thirteen year-old Fitzwilliam Darcy is all excitement and eagerness to be returning home for the holidays. Young Master Darcy fully intends to spend his holiday season in good cheer, cavorting with his cousins, doting on his two year-old sister, and enjoying some Darcy family Christmas traditions. However, due to his mother's recently diagnosed and serious illness, Darcy's plans for merriment and mischief may have to be put on hold this year...

Because of the oppressive grief and tension that surrounds Pemberley this Christmas, Master Darcy takes to riding his horse into the village of Lambton each morning. One morning, he happens upon a local mummers* troupe working on a play, and decides to befriend them and provide some much needed lessons in sword-fighting. Master Darcy soon finds a comfortable camaraderie with the troupe and ends up taking a part in their play! Are these suitable companions for the heir of Pemberley? Will his parents approve of his playacting in public? How will he manage to participate in a play when he is suppose to be sitting in church with his family?

In Young Master Darcy: A Lesson in Honour, Pamela Aidan captures the essence of the dignified and honorable Darcy family with excellent precision. I found her style to be superbly Austenesque and I appreciated how she remained true to the time period and Jane Austen's original novel. Moreover, I loved how invested I felt in her characters; I cried, smiled and laughed with them.

One element I loved was seeing Darcy, the Fitzwilliam boys, and George Wickham as young lads. Ms. Aidan drew from what is known about these characters and astutely illustrated what they might have been like as children. In addition, Ms. Aidan provided the same treatment to Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. Her Lady Anne (Mrs. Darcy) was an affectionate and understanding person who "dearly love[d] a laugh." And her Mr. Darcy Senior, while being a loving and devoted father, exhibited some traits, such as pride, reserve, and high morals, that will later be seen in his son. I also took delight in her rendition of Lord Matlock, who frequently made me laugh by referring to his sons as "little hellions!"

In the wide array of Austenesque literature, Pride and Prejudice prequels are a rarity! I am so pleased that Ms. Aidan took it upon herself to tell us about Darcy's youth. While Young Master Darcy: A Lesson in Honour does not encompass the whole of Darcy's childhood, there is a promise of more to come, and according to Ms. Aidan this novella might possibly blossom into a multi-volume series!

If you are interested in seeing the austere and fastidious Mr. Darcy as a young boy, learning life's lessons, getting into scrapes, and preparing to be the Master of Pemberley this is a novella you will not want to miss!

*According to dictionary.com, a mummer is a person who wears a mask or fantastic costume while merrymaking or taking part in a pantomime, especially at Christmas and other festive seasons.

**Note: Just wanted to point out that this is a 120 page novella, not a full-length novel. At the price of $12.50, some might be expecting a lengthier work. Perhaps it will be available in eBook soon at a reduced price?
