Great Memoir

A few weeks ago i read Acceptable Loss for the second time after first reading it several years ago. Over the last ten years ive read well over a 100 memoirs written by guys who served in WW2 and Vietnam and in my opinion this book ranks up there as one of the better ones. Its fast paced and interesting yet its not just a book of war stories, in comparison with my other fav vietnam memoirs like Chickenhawk, Ghosts and Shadows, Baptism, Killing Zone, Father Soldier Son and Hundred Miles it too delves a few layers deeper than your average memoir in describing the physical and psychological toll combat in an unpopular war has on a young man. After finsishing the book while down the jersey shore on vacation this past summer i made it a point to see for the first time the n.j. vietnam veterans memorial during my trip north on the garden state parkway and find the name of the ranger who was killed while on patrol with Kregg towards the begining of the book. .... As for the book i highly recommend it to military buffs and many others who may be thinking about reading a first person account of the war.

A reality check

Kregg Jorgenson should be recognized as one of the finest authors on the Vietnam war. Acceptable Loss is his first effort and set the tone for every subsequent work. If you want to know why "America's finest" served during this unpopular war, and why they gave their best, read Acceptable Loss and then pick up the rest of Jorgenson's works. You'll come away feeling patriotic and proud to be an American. Thanks, Kregg.

A great look at the effects of war on the average grunt .

Kregg Jorgenson takes you through his very personal and both physically and mentally painful account of his entire time in Vietnam. Although a decorated "hero", he shows us how he found something far more improtant than his medals or cause: his "buddies". He guides the reader through the numerous harrowing experiences that re-shaped his whole way of thinking and does not try to gloss over his own shortcomings. The one over-riding thing I can say about this book is that it is honest. There are no stats, no overall perspective, just the plain truth about what he witnessed and felt during his tour. That is the most shocking, honourable, moving and often funny thing he can write. An immensely enjoyable book, so much so I read it virtually everywhere I got a chance to sit down; gripping to the last.

Great book on early Habsburg Monarchy

This is a great book that covers in good detail the rise of Austria under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy from the 30 Years War to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Charles Ingrao gives great insight into the minds and personalities of all the Habsburg monarchs, including some of the less known ones like Ferdinand II and Joseph II. He explains how the nation had to develop from three kingdoms with one king to one nation under an emperor. Also covered is the role of the Habsburgs as Holy Roman Emperors and their dominance in Germany until the rise of Prussia in the mid 18th Century when Austria was forced to look east for power.

A more long lasting issue covered, that even has effects to the present day, is the issue of nationality and ethnicity within the empire. This is the issue that arguably brought the end to the multinational empire and has caused so many wars in the Balkans in the past two decades.

My only real complaint is that at times Ingrao can get a bit bogged down in the details, and it can be a little hard to follow. Also, it should be stated that the book is inevitably biased a bit toward Austria and therefore is slightly anti-Prussia and French at times.

Overall though, if you want a good overview on the development of the early Austrian monarchy this is a great choice.

Explains how the Habsburg empire thrived in early modern Europe

The Habsburgs are one of the great ruling dynasties in history. From their medieval origins in Austria the family would eventually occupy thrones that dominated much of central and eastern Europe before a series of setbacks and political shifts brought about the end of their monarchy in 1918. Yet as Charles Ingrao argues, far too much attention is focused on the final century of the monarchy's existence, which has the effect of distorting our understanding of it and how it survived for so long. His book, which is a survey of the monarchy from the start of the Thirty Years' War to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, examines the factors which he sees as shaping the "distinctive course of Austrian history," factors which he argues continued to define the development of the monarchy for the duration of its existence.

As Ingrao notes, the Habsburgs faced formidable challenges in governing their vast and diverse territories, which left them vulnerable to both local resistance and external threats. Yet he shows how the Habsburgs pragmatically turned these challenges into strengths, building an enduring empire that survived and even thrived during the early modern period. One of the foremost of these was its geographical position, which left it vulnerable to attack yet also valuable as an ally. Such alliances were the product of deft diplomacy, something the Habsburgs had to learn to master not only in dealing with the other powers of Europe but with the numerous minorities that made up their subjects. This diversity forced successive emperors to pursue consensus rather than confrontation with local elites, which left the monarchy weaker as an institution than many of its contemporaries in Europe but also served as a form of restraint in its international policy, as the monarchy was forced to avoid wars of aggression for which they would be unable to mobilize the necessary support. Their policies may not have made for the grandest of European states, but they helped the monarchy endure long after many of its contemporaries exhausted themselves through inconclusive wars.

Such an approach can run counter to preconceived notions about the Habsburg monarchy, yet Ingrao's arguments are convincing. Through them, the Habsburg empire's status as a great power and its survival over so many centuries become comprehensible to readers, helping them to understand not just its endurance but its long-overshadowed vitality as well. Well-written and thought-provoking, this book is an excellent introduction for anyone seeking to understand the history of the Habsburg empire and how such a seemingly unworkable state ruled so much of Europe for as long as it did.

excellent detailed history of the Habsburg Monarchy

As the author Charles Ingrao states in his preface to this excellent history, it can be difficult to combine the brevity of a textbook history with the completeness and detail sought by the scholar. Fortunately, Mr. Ingrao provides fascinating and detailed portraits of the historical background and the interacting personalities of the period. The Habsburg monarchs display personality traits which often influence the historical events of the time ( the counter-revolutionary zeal of
Ferdinand II instigating the thirty years' war ). Prince Eugene of Savoy is certainly one of the most brilliant military leaders of any time, and his prominant role in the defeat of the army of Louis XIV is emphasized in this book. The history begins at the thirty years' war in 1618 and extends through the numerous challenges to the Habsburg Monarchy, including the Turks, the French, and the Prussians. The enlghtened rule ( and reform ) of both Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II are discussed in the later chapters leading into the early nineteenth century. Mr. Ingrao has taken care to incorporate details of economic as well as social-cultural events to support his thesis that the Habsburg Monarchy was a very positive and active influence on the society of this period, and what a period for the empire!
For those interested in the history of Austria or the Habsburg Monarchy, this book offers the extra details to make history interesting. The personalities are fascinating, and the historical background of the period often anticipates our questions or concerns and leads into absorbing discussions of these issues.

With no stone left unturned, the book goes step-by-step through every bit of the process of building a fanbase and what we have done when working with groups who built themselves a music career they can make a living from. I wrote this book so my friends would have an answer to the questions of how to build a fanbase and I am happy to be able to share it with everyone.

Buy This Book and thank yourself later.....

Buy this Book, don't think about it, just buy it and you WILL thank yourself later. I don't write many reviews, but this book is full of wisdom and insight about how you should approach all aspects of your music career (and all your business in general), that it would be a dis-service for me not to write about it. First off, I have been purchasing "music business books" since 1994 and while I always gained a nugget or two of knowledge from them, I have never read a book that presented an entire "roadmap" for music business success. I have purchased all the books you see here on amazon from "Hack Your Hit" to "Future Hit DNA" and while those books are helpful, they don't compare to the 40+ chapters (600 pages!) that encompasses what you get here. This book will not only help you gain and attract fans on sites like Twitter and Facebook, but offer you with a philosophy on HOW to gain and attract these fans. It will also give you a list of about 100 other social networks and other sites that you probably never knew about and HOW to go about utilizing them successfully. It also will teach you how to get your songs licensed, how to prepare for the studio, how to get on tour and about everything else you would need to know about the modern music industry (along with a plethora of contacts to get you started, and how to use them). In my opinion this is the complete MUSIC BIBLE for DIY musicians. BUY IT

I wish this book was available ten years ago...

I've been a long-time reader of Musformation, and this book essentially takes all of the wisdom taught on the site and compiles into one easy to read codex of information. It actually contains tons more extra information, and it is well worth the money. Implement just a few of these techniques and the book will pay for itself. I'm about halfway through, and very impressed. The book provides a great framework for developing a strategy to launch (or improve) an artist's or band's music career. This resource isn't just a regurgitation of the same tired music advice that you've heard before. There are tips on everything from website building essentials and how to properly use social networking, to ways to make your touring more efficient and effective, and how to capitalize on album leaks. There are also great lists that make this book equally effective as a go-to manual for fine tuning certain aspects of your strategy, as it is for a cover-to-cover course on how to navigate the music industry. It's written in an accessible, and sometimes witty style that makes all of the information easily digestible. I really do wish a resource like this was available when I first started making music. I highly recommend!

If you're a DIY musician/artist, you need this book!

Every musician/artist at some point has probably said to themselves, "I really wish there was a handbook that could give me all the tips and tricks to marketing, social networking and concepts to get my music heard". Well look not further, this book is right on the money! It has everything you can possibly think of to help you navigate the various social networks and marketing strategies and make the most out of them. Get more fans is not one of those boring books that tells industry stories all day and talks about the places you wish you could be, instead it focuses on helping you get where you need to be if you apply yourself and use the methods in the book. I've been following Jesse Cannon's musformation.com blog for a couple of years now and I can say if I knew now what i've learned from Jesse and the site about 5 - 6 years ago, things would've have been completely different for me and my music career. So if you've never heard of musformation.com and you need an opinion on wether you should spend the 25 bucks or not, well here you go - BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
