About the Author

Asit Kumar Datta is a former professor and ex-head of the Department of Applied Physics and later of the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta. He received his Ph.D. in power electronics from the University of Calcutta, and started his career at the same university as a lecturer. In 1989, he was appointed professor of the same department and later moved to the newly created department of Applied Optics and Photonics. Professor Datta has contributed significantly to the area of power electronics, control instrumentation, photonics, and optical computing. He executed 12 funded and sponsored research projects and has published more than 120 papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings, and he has also guided 14 research students towards their Ph.D. degrees. Professor Datta is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, the Optical Society of India, and the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers. He represented India at the International Commission for Optics (ICO), Paris and was the Indian representative in two divisions of the International Commission of Illumination (CIE), Geneva.

Soumika Munshi received her M.Sc. (Tech.) degree followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Physics with a specialization in Optics and Optoelectronics from the University of Calcutta in 1996 and 2003, respectively. She joined as a scientist at the Instrument Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, a laboratory of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), under the Government of India’s Ministry of Defence, in 2004. She is now associated with DRDO headquarters in New Delhi, and worked in between at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad. Her areas of interest include: image processing, photonic computing, lasers, and photonic instrumentation. She has published and presented more than 30 papers in international and national journals and at conference proceedings.

PROBLEMS OF TRANSLATION: Adventures to Rival Don Quixote

This amusing picaresque tale explores the joys and hazards of embarking on a seemingly far-fetched but ultimately satisfying quest: how foreign language translations affect a work's lilterary quality and meanings. The pace is swift, the descriptions vivid, and the cast of devious characters who put the hero in constant jeopardy make PROBLEMS OF TRANSLATION unputdownable. Highly unusual and a fun read.

Problems of Translations translates toa goodfun read!

I am an avid reader of many types of genres. This had a little intrique, fantasy, intellectual stimulation. I had not expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. I found myself casting it for a movie, which I rarely do when reading a book. I really liked the protagonist, Charlie, very smart, a little naïve but so hopeful and positive. It was a fun read but also a wonderfully written travelogue of some exotic places. Walter Mitty meets a Beautiful Mind.

Priceless Resource

For $17.99 I just made off with an inexpensive but PRICELESS education on writing. I have taken several helpful online courses for every area: character building, plotting, writing, editing, libel, publishing via a traditional publisher or self-publishing, cover creation, and how to market my book and most importantly build my author's platform. Holy Toledo. This is a step by step guidebook (I think of it as my writer's bible now) that has helped me not only revisit a book I wrote several years ago to rewrite it for new adults, but quite honestly, has helped me with a book that has nothing to do with new adults, as well. Deborah's writing is seamless and so easy to follow -- almost as if she is sitting across the table from the reader and providing mentorship. And her exercises are new and fun, and not the usual exercises I've run into at various conferences, or in classes. I'm not going anywhere, or writing another book, without Deborah Halverson's Writing New Adult Fiction sitting next to my keyboard. Happy reading and writing!

A provocative assessment of Loie Fuller's significance

I have long recognized the important role Loie Fuller played in 20th century dance, and her impact on turn-of-the-century arts and letters. (Her influence on Mallarmé and Rodin alone would qualify her as worthy of study.) An American who made her greatest impact in Paris, Fuller is most often cited as a brilliant technician for her manipulations of costumes, scenery and especially lighting. But if one examines how other artists (visual and literary) responded to her work, their reactions were far from "technical." There's a good bio of Fuller (by the Currents), and (if you read French) the study "Loie Fuller, Danseuse de l'Art Nouveau" that looks at her influences on visual art. But Garelick's book is the first I've encountered that really examines Fuller's work as a dancer, artist, and filmmaker, and attempts to examine the work's content from several perspectives. This is a thoughtful, well-written study, and I'll forgive Garelick occasionally repeating herself for the insights she offers into Fuller the dancer and artist, and the unique, seminal place she had in the history of modern dance.

Dancing With the Stars

This is "cultural studies" at its best. Garelick examines the life and the work of Loie Fuller and allows us to see her impact upon the culture from she sprang, and which she subsequently influenced. Modern dance would not be what it became without her example, and people outside the dance world (like William Butler Yeats) were as caught under her spell as balletomanes and other dance fans. Superbly written, and full of interesting facts and well-formulated ideas.

Who was Jesse Livermore?
Jesse Livermore, was the most successful stock and commodities
trader that ever operated on the stock markets. He was both the
man who made the most money in a single day and the man who
lost the most money in a single day. In fact he made and lost three
great fortunes between 1900 and 1940.

Singlehandedly he caused the two great Wall Street crashes of
1907 and 1929, making millions from both. When he speculated he
speculated big and was known on Wall Street as the Boy Plunger.
For a brief period in the early 1930s he was one of the world’s
richest men with a personal fortune believed to be worth over
$150 million, $100 million of that earned in just a few days from
the Wall Street crash of 1929. In the end it was too extreme a
change of fortunes for any man to cope with and Livermore shot
himself in a New York hotel lobby in 1940 aged just 63. His legacy
continued and his son, Jesse jr later also committed suicide as
did his grandson, Jesse III.

In the summer of 1929 most people believed that the stock market would
continue to rise forever. Wall Street was enjoying a eight-year winning run
that had seen the Dow Jones increase 1,000 per cent from the start of
the decade - an unprecedented rise. The Dow peaked at 381 on 3rd
September and later that day the most respected economist of the day,
Irving Fisher, declared that the rise was “permanent”. One man vigorously
disagreed and sold $300 million worth of shares short. Two weeks later the
market began falling and rising again on successive days for no apparent
reason. This situation endured for a month until what became famously
known as the three ‘black’ days: On Black Thursday 24th October the Dow
fell 11% at the opening bell, prompting absolute chaos. The fall was stalled
when leading financiers of the day clubbed together to buy huge quantities
of shares. But it was short-lived succor and over that weekend blanket
negative newspaper commentary caused the second of the ‘black’ days
on Black Monday 26th October when the market dropped another 13%.
The third ‘black’ day, Black Tuesday 29th October saw the market drop a
further 12%. When the dust had settled, between the 24th and 29th October,
Wall Street had lost $30 billion. Only much later did it became known
that the man who had sold short $300 million worth of shares was Jesse
Livermore. Livermore had made $100 million and overnight became one
of the richest men in the world. It remains, adjusted for inflation, the most
money ever made by any individual in a period of seven days. This is the
story of that man.

Paul Tudor Jones’ connection with Jesse Livermore began when he started his career in finance at Livermore’s first broker, E.F. Hutton at the age of 26. He became a student of Livermore and resolved that every new employee be handed a copy of Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, the fictional biography of Livermore, on their first day at work. His study of Livermore’s methods paid off in 1987 when he was able to predict Black Monday on 19th October 1987. Employing exactly the same short strategies as Livermore did in 1907 and 1929 he is said to have tripled his net worth that day. He never looked back and by 2014 his firm had over $14 billion under management. He has consistently made money for himself and his clients so much so that Forbes magazine rated him the 345th richest man in the world in its 2014 wealth rankings. Nowadays he devotes as much of his time to philanthropy as making money for himself running the highly successful Robin Hood Foundation. He started it to give money away himself and encourage other successful fund managers to do so as well. The Foundation is unique in that 100% of donations are spent on good causes. Fortune magazine called it: “one of the most innovative and influential philanthropic organizations of our time.”

This is a story of triumph and tragedy. Jesse Livermore is notable as one of the few people who ever made it into the richest tiers of society by speculating — by trading stocks and commodities — betting on price movements.

This is three stories in one. Story one is the clever trader with an intuitive knack who learned to adapt when conditions changed, until the day came when it got too hard. Story two is the man who lacked financial risk control, and took big chances, a few of which worked out spectacularly, and a few of ruined him financially. Story three is how too much success, if not properly handled, can ruin a man, with lust, greed and pride leading to his death.

The author spends most of his time on story one, next most on story two, then the least on story three. The three stories flow naturally from the narrative that is largely chronological. By the end of the book, you see Jesse Livermore — a guy who did amazing things, but ultimately failed in money and life.

Let me briefly summarize those three aspects of his life so that you can get a feel for what you will run into in the book:

The Clever Trader

Jesse Livermore came to the stock market in Boston at age 14, and was a very quick study. He showed intuition on market affairs that impressed the most of the older men who came to trade at the brokerage where he worked. It wasn’t too long before he wanted to invest for himself, but he didn’t have enough money to open a brokerage account, so he went to a bucket shop. Bucket shops were gambling parlors where small players gambled on stock prices. He showed a knack for the game and made a lot of money. Like someone who beats the casinos in Vegas, the proprietors forced him to leave.

He then had more than enough money to meet his current needs, and set up a brokerage account. But the stock market did not behave like a bucket shop, and so he lost money while he learned to adapt. Eventually, he succeeded at speculating on both stocks and commodities, leading to his greatest successes in being short the stock market prior to the panic of 1907, and the crash in 1929. During the 1920s, he started his own firm to try to institutionalize his gifts, and it worked for much of the era.

After the crash in 1929, the creation of the SEC and all the associated laws and regulations made speculating a lot more difficult, to the point where he could not make significant money speculating anymore.

The Poor Financial Risk Manager

Amid the successes, he tended to aim for greater wins after his largest successes, which led to him losing much of what he had previously made. One time he was cheated out of much of what he had while trading cotton.

Amid all of that, he was well-liked by most he interacted with in a business context. Even after great losses, many wanted him to succeed again, and so they bankrolled him after failure. Before the Great Depression, he did not disappoint them — he succeeded in speculation and came roaring back, repaying all of his past debts with interest.

In one sense, it was live by the big speculation, and die by the big speculation. When you play with so much borrowed money, it’s hard for results to not be volatile.

A Rock Star of His Era

When he won big, he lived big. Compared to many wealthy people of his era, he let spending expand far more than many who had more reliable sources of income. Where did the money go? Yachts, homes, staff, wives, women, women, women… Aside from the last of his three wives, his marriages were troubled.

His last wife was a nice woman who was independently wealthy, and after Livermore lost it all in the mid-’30s, he increasingly relied on her to stay afloat. When he could no longer be the hero who could win a good living out of the market via speculation, his deflated pride led him to commit suicide in 1940.

A Sad Book Amid Amazing Successes

Sadly, his son and grandson who shared his name committed suicide in 1975 and 2006, respectively. On the whole, the story of Jesse Livermore’s life and legacy is a sad one. It should disabuse people of the notion that wealth brings happiness. If anything, it teaches that money that comes too easily tends to get lost easily also.

The author does a good job weaving the strands of his life into a consistent whole. The book is well-written, and probably the best book out there on the life of the famous speculator that so many present speculators admire. A side benefit is that in passing, you will learn a lot about the development of the markets during a time when they were less regulated. (The volatility of markets was obvious then. It not obvious now, which is why people get surprised by it when it explodes.)

This is a comprehensive book that explains the life and times of Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest speculators in history. It will teach you history, but it won’t teach you how to speculate.

I have read Reminiscences of a Stock Broker a dozen times over the past 20 years. I always wondered what happened to Jessie after 1922 when Reminiscences ended.

Tom Rubython answers all of those questions and much more with this book, Jessie Livermore, Boy Plunger.

One of those rare books you just cannot put down until you've read it all.

Good for filling in the gaps

Wrote the GMAT twice before turning to this book after I wrote the exam the second time. Prior to this I had used GMAT Prep, the GMAT Prep additional question pack 1, the Official Guide, the Manhattan set of 8 strategy guides, and of course practice tests.

My biggest criticism of this book is that the difficulty levels, even for the so-called 'Challenge' problems, don't get that high. Manhattan GMAT quant questions can be brutal, often harder than many actual GMAT questions because they tend to be heavy on calculation in addition to being tricky. As a result, MGMAT has rightly developed a reputation for being the go-to choice for practicing quant. TGMATM problems seem pretty basic by comparison and a little too easy.

TGMATM adds value in two areas: repetitive drills that drive certain points home and its innovative coverage of minor question types. These drill questions are often pretty simple, but they make doing certain types of calculations second-nature while helping you get a 'fingertip feel' for certain kinds of manipulations. Weighted averages, permutations and combinations come to mind.

Even after all the prep I had done prior to picking up TGMATM, there were still quite a few 'Aha!' moments because this book has a knack for demystifying minor question types and trick questions that can be solved in any of several ways but defy ready categorization, as well as taking novel approaches to topics I thought I already had a pretty good handle on. It's a testament to the value of returning to the basics without simply passively reviewing tired old flash cards.

To me its real value lies either in filling in the gaps for someone who has been around the block already, or serving as the foundation for more rigorous GMAT prep if you're fresh out the gate.

It's not a bad place to start, and it's a pretty good place to fine-tune, but it is NOT comprehensive and all-encompassing, which I think was supposed to be the goal.

The most complete GMAT Math Guide hands down but not very friendly

I am the founder of GMAT Club and top 1000 reviewer on Amazon - I have seen a lot of GMAT books and also reviewed pretty much all of them. This is a single most complete book that includes everything you need to get a solid score on the quant (you should also get the OG 12, and the author recommends it as well). It is also not a book that just came out of nowhere, Total GMAT math has been available as an ebook for about 4 years now and I am glad to see it is finally available in the print format. However, it does assume a greater level of general math knowledge as well as commitment than most GMAT books - that's what you get with a comprehensive book

The get the most of this book: 1) Read the first intro chapters including the one on "how to use this book" 2) Take each suggestion seriously 3) Make your own notes in a separate notebook 4) Always time yourself with a timer and keep a GMAT error log

Strengths:
- 300+ GMAT style questions
- Good explanations with diagrams
- The book is writen as an instruction manual with many insights and tips n the chapters/explnations
- Over 500 Exercises (non-gmat style questions)
- Covers all topics test on the gmat including probabilyt, statistics, etc without going too far
- Each question are gets a section (inequalities, absolute value, work problems, etc)
- Includes 100 of 700+ questions
- Good strategy suggestions including focusing on concepts rather than solving thousands of questions, writing question information down, and mental math concepts
- Good paper and formulas are done well

Weaknesses:
- The chapters are structured in a slightly unorthodox pattern. The book starts with algebra, then goes into geometry, then work problems, and then number properties. I felt that moving number properties closer to the beginning of the book would make more sense. I also felt the chapters were a bit choppy (only a few pages long) but that's my preference
- Could be intimidating: the text is very tightly packed with just a handful of illustrations. (see my uploaded image for details)
- No highlighting or a summary sheet - would be great to have formulas or key concepts highlighted on pages or at the end of the book
- Copyright and website address on every page - gets a bit old and distracting
- No OG recommendations table - would be helpful to have a list of questions from the OG for additional practice after each chapter
- Table of content is not usable (11 pages)

Bottom line: This is the ultimate book for math on the GMAT. If you are looking for a 50 on the quant, this is the book to get. However, this may be too much for some who are not seeking to spend 6 weeks on this book. Let not the price scare you - it is on the low side of what other prep companies charge for the entire math book set.

1: Rushing to take tests before learning anything - do take a diagnostic test, but stop right there
2: Starting with the Official Guide and wasting of official GMAT questions
3: Giving GMAT the worst time of the day - studying after a long day at work

5: Starting to prepare with poor English proficiency

big time Quant improvement!

I ordered this book to prepare for a GMAT retake. I went from 580 to 640 (Q34 to Q40) in one month of prep (I know I'm not a 700+ genius scorer, so I don't know how useful this is for those super high-level students out there) and I have this book to thank. Mr. Sackmann has a way of explaining the problems without being wordy or confusing - his language made things click, especially in the probablilty and combination/permutation sections. Each section offers an explanantion (including basics, how often the type of problem appears in the test, useful tricks, etc), then a 'drill' section followed by practice word problems and a challenge if appropriate.

The layout makes it easy to focus on your weak areas and there are plenty of practice questions to help raise your ability level. The drills are particularly useful if, like me, you sometimes screw up a problem not due to misunderstanding the question or not knowing HOW to solve it, but in the actual solving. I made remarkably fewer math errors after completing every drill.
It took me about a week to work through it, averaging 2-3 hours a day. However, I would also recommend the OG as the question styles are a bit different than what the GMAT would ask.

The only thing I would change is the spacing of the text. I like working the problems on the page and would have loved a little more scratchwork space. But the content is fantastic and a great way to polish your quant skills!
