Engaging and intriging are the first words that spring to mind when considering this book. The story moves at a good pace and the reader is eager to reach the next chapter. The characters are strong and by the end of the book you feel as though you really know them. If time had allowed, once I got hooked by the story I could have read it in one sitting because you just had to know what the outcome was to be. I will certainly purchase book two and look forward to where the story will lead me. Read this book, you will not be disappointed.

A Good Paranormal Romance Book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms King sure used many big words throughout the book which was refreshing as this is not the norm for other paranormal romance books that I've read to date (and I read quite alot of them). Her vivid imagination was captured in her book quite well. And because the book was set in Australia, I just loved it! As an Aussie, I am familiar with the geography of this book (for once) and now I really want to visit Cape Schanck (I only went out to Mornington Peninsula, not Cape Schanck).

Anyway, getting back to the book, I really liked Bree and Sebastian. There were twists and turns throughout the book and I liked how her 'power' developed throughout the book. And Sebastian is so sweet. The book flowed smoothly and everything made sense. The book was also fast-paced which was great.

I just started the 2nd book and I'm quite addicted to the series already. Well done Ms King.

There was a lot of criticism about the big words that were used which I found kind of embarrassing. Its embarrassing to think that literate people would be frightened of big words. I found the alternate universe theories interesting. There were themes of Buddhism and new age which are, I believe the inspiration of the other world. Anyway, it reminds me of the themes the author used. I only reserve five stars for the greatest books I have ever read. It was an interesting story. Another description or phrase that comes to mind "Ye Shall be as gods."

A fascinating and eye opening look into the feudal Japan

If you have ever had even a passing interest in the history of Japan from the perspective of the warrior class who played a major role in defining it, then this is probably the best choice of book on the subject. It approaches the topic from the earliest accounts of the samurai right though to the end of the samurai era, taking a fairly high level, "big picture" type view. The book looks more at the "why" something happened, than the "how" of events. This provides some fascinating insights into the history of Japan and allows the reader to grasp the overall history of feudal Japan with just the right balance of details and objectivity. That said, there is still quite a bit of detail of some of the more notable battles, but high level, campaign type information is not the purpose of this book. It is more interested in letting the reader understand what happened in Japanese history and why it unfolded as it did, with out bogging down in micro detail. The book is superbly researched and is very well written, and despite the fact that it is a "history" book, it is a very enjoyable, extremely informative read. It is thoroughly recommended.

Very Informative and Entertaining

Stephen Turnbull, in my opinion, is one of the foremost historians of Japanese military history, and certainly one of the most prolific. His writings are well researched and represent the various strata of the eras he writes. Starting with the early history of Japan and extending his writings through the Edo Period, events are written not only of the deeds of the samurai, but also of the political, religious, and cultural influences that helped form this unique class of warriors. Forces in society such as the Emperor, the establishment of Buddhism and later Christianity as a religion, and the numerous foreigners who entered Japan are all shown to have shaped them. Another aspect of this book which is very appealing is that where other historians will focus only upon the much broader aspects of Japanese history, Dr. Turnbull provides insight into the samurai culture by giving excerpts from chronicles of individual families within this warrior society, thereby stirring the imagination of his readers to a greater extent. This book is truly a great resource for understanding this fascinating military order.

Huizenga’s comics, most featuring Everyman Glenn Ganges, elevate the everyday into the rarefied. Ganges is wont to dip into reveries or break into elaborate monologues about mundane tasks like unpacking groceries, analogous to Huizenga’s ability to spin intricate sagas out of quotidian moments, with his simple, cartoony line drawings evolving into fabulously labyrinthine panels. The standout here is a sequence in which Ganges tells his wife about watching a sunset from his carrel at the library. As he retells the event, each successive version becomes more chaotic and kinetic, culminating in a totally abstract fold-out centerpiece. In another story, Ganges’ attempt to allay his neighbors’ fear of a blood-red moon that they believe portends the end of the world grows into a goofily intricate account of optical science. While Huizenga’s more recent work is even more impressive, these early stories, originally self-published in minicomics a decade ago, constitute a prime example of what the comics medium can achieve that other forms of storytelling cannot. --Gordon Flagg

Weak at best

This thin book presents very little substance, and is hopefully not representative of the authors full grasp of the subject. It begins with complaints about Wicca and Wiccans and the remnants of Christian influence that the author feels were dragged into Wicca by those who converted over from Christianity. The author ignores centuries of pre-Christian writings about Witchcraft and claims that Witches and Witchcraft first arose in the Christian period as a protest to its tenets. He is rather sketchy about who or what these protestors were before feeling the need to revolt or what they believed in that was so contrary to Christian tenets that it merited turning to the Devil as an ally. The author also states that Witches were never Pagan or religious, and in doing so ignores a large body of ancient writings that portray Witches such as Medea as a priestess of Hecate, and the Witch Canidia calling upon the goddess Diana.

The book goes on to tie Witchcraft with the Devil of Judaic-Christian notoriety (as though nothing in Europe existed outside of Middle Eastern concepts before the influence of this region found its way into European lands). However, no being matching the Devil was indigenous to old European culture before contact with the Hebrews and the Arab lands. Therefore the author seems to want us to believe that Europe had no preexisting magical practitioners of its own, which is simply untrue of European peoples.

The rest of the book is far too brief on what "Authentic Witchcraft" is and what its practices are. If this is someone's first introduction to the topic, she or he will come away with very little understanding or useful information. On the other hand, if you're looking for questionable opinions like those all too common on Internet forums, then you're sure to find familiar ground in this book.

In my many years of studing and practice of Witchcraft I know that pompous titles and dramatic claims don't count. This is a book that makes a lot of misconceptions and fills a lot of gaps only by the will of author. In resume, it is only and solely a piece of advertise of the school of the author.

I've previously reviewed this book at four stars, but I haven't picked the book up since then. However, I took the time to re-read it again, and I'm left wondering why I thought such a poorly prepared book as this garnered a four star review in my mind.

We'll start with the most important part of any witchcraft text: history. The history provided is clearly romanticized, to the point of being entirely fictitious. A book that claims to be "the historic tradition revealed" should probably have a better grasp of legitimate witchcraft history, which is not difficult to uncover if one actually outs the slightest bit of effort forth. There is talk of spiritual terrorism, war, things that never happened. There is some belief amongst scholars that the worship of the Satan figure arose around the Early-Modern period as people grew more resentful of the Church, but history gives us no information regarding "spiritual terrorists."

That being said, the witchcraft system presented in this book does not match up with any historical information we have. In fact, this tradition uses something called the "Counter Mass" which is a Satanic rite. While I have no problem with Satanic rite in witchcraft, the rite itself cannot be proposed as historically accurate. We know that the "witches" as we think of them now were the peasantry, and the secluded individuals on the edge of society. While the Devil figure certainly has a prominent place in some cultural witchcraft practices, the rites and rituals of historical witches would have been very primitive, based entirely upon the earth and the hearth. The Sabbath rite this tradition uses is a polished, clean, and highly church-like ritual. To add insult to injury, much of the magic presented in this book is Harry Potter-esque. There even comes a section where the author claims one can, in theory, light a candle or fire simply through the use of a word and a wand. In fact, the author states that a witch can perform s lifetime of magic using only a wand. Once more, historical accuracy comes into question here, as well as concern over the possible delusions of the author. There are then several claims made about certain days being good for certain workings. In some traditions maybe, but when a witch has to work magic, they will work magic, regardless of what day it may be.

Furthermore, as another historical blow, the author states that witches were NEVER pagan, which is a complete failure on his part in regards to research. Now, our English word witch certainly does find basis in Christianity, but multiple examples of pagan witches exist, especially in the Etruscan culture. Herodias, Diana, Aradia, Lucifer, all Etruscan witchcraft deities. And then, what of Medea? Circe? Greek pagan sorceresses who were known and feared/revered for their magic. They may not be called witches in the language, but the translation is very close. To erase an entire group of people because they don't fit your statements is honestly pathetic.

If the author wanted to write about HIS tradition, he could have said so and been free of these problems. It seems though, that the witchcraft community needs to invalidate other traditions and make false claims of antiquity in order to feel more valid themselves.

To add insult to injury, there are dozens of misspellings throughout the book, grammar errors, etc. I believe I counted three spellings of Isobel Gowdie, none of which were correct. There's also a horrendous attitude towards Wicca in this book. So much so, in fact, that the author almost comes off sounding like a cult leader. Being that this book serves as the textbook for his own academy, it certainly fits the profile. There's also the way his followers praise him and become insanely defensive if you challenge his words. This is interesting, as the magic system he gives is very similar to Wicca regarding belief and lack of action. The author claims this is an ecstatic tradition, but fails to give any information on how spiritual ecstasy is attained. This is probably the largest fault in the book, alongside the horrendous misinformation given.

This book is definitely not worth your money. Look to Troy Books for information regarding legitimate old-style witchcraft, particularly "The Devil's Plantation", "The Black Toad", "Traditional Witchcraft: A Cornish Book of Ways", and "The Devil's Dozen."

About the Author

Author Carl Sessions Stepp is professor of journalism at the University of Maryland, where he has taught since 1983. He is senior editor of American Journalism Review and worked a reporter and editor for 12 years with the St. Petersburg Times, Charlotte Observer and USA Today. Stepp has served as visiting writing and editing coach at dozens of newspapers and news organizations and frequently conducts writing and editing clinics for newspapers, journalism groups and other organizations.

A good supplement to your editing class.

I've used this text in my editing sections and found it very useful. It's not a "doorstop" text, but a concise guide to thinking about the editing process. I have the print and Kindle versions. I thought I could use my laptop to project the text on a screen while lecturing, but found it was too easy to lose my place. If you use this with a grammar guide and the AP style book, you will go a long way toward a solid class for undergraduates who want to be better editors, either for journalism, online media or business.
